1923 Stanley steam car Model 740D Big Sedan

Garage Find! 1923 Stanley Model 740D Big Sedan Serial # 23453

This is a wonderful find, being sold for the Estate of Walter Nuss. It has been at least 20 years since this car has run, but it is a very solid car with some nice history! Back in the mid 1940’s this was “Stayton’s Steamer”. He or someone has done previous restoration on the car but it is largely in the same state it was from these articles with its unique “Sisson” Ball Headlights and fender mounted rear-view mirrors.

This car has been upgraded to a 27 inch “30 HP” boiler and burner. The burner (which needs at least the insulation redone) is a slotted baker type which looks to be of Amsley design. There is a Cruban Type pilot with the burner. Various valves have been replaced with some ball valves which I would personally not use. No water gauge is currently installed but there is included a kidney gauge and a dead-sight gauge which seem to have been in process as the firewall is marked with some boiler heights in old tape.
The pump pit appears to have had some attention with either chromed or stainless pump pistons. It is DIRTY however as the upholstery stuffing is dry and falling into these areas. As with 740’s the air tank is under the seat. Interestingly, there is an air gauge in the standard location under the seat view with the door open, but also one on the dash. There is a centre hole in the dash missing potentially an older boiler level indicator.

Front upholstery seems to have been redone from original. The rear however appears to be original and is quite good for its age. New carpets and the jump seats were also likely redone at some point. Windows have original mechanisms however the rear 2 doors seem to have fabricated handles for the windows. All doors open easy and click shut very well – a nice solid body! Roof is dry and some cracking but not terrible. Headliner is remarkably good. Small leather handles and straps are missing as often the case.

The chassis is in good overall condition. The wire wheels are very solid and little rust. (Although it should be noted that both front wheels have some bent spokes. Despite this, they run very true). The car rolls easy. The left perch pole was scorched or broken (or both!) and has a steel bar repair in place. 2 perch poles are included, one with a “front” fitting on it. A brace was added from side to side on the front most running board brackets. The engine insulation cover is currently off. The block is rusty as usual and there are hose clamps to hold the packing nuts in place, but the valve cover has not been beaten up so it was either replaced at some point or not been messed with much. Generator appears to have been swapped at some point but what is mounted is solid. Fuel tanks are both wet with old fuel, dirty, but appear solid and cleanable.
Please feel free to message me for my phone number/Email to discuss or setup an inspection on the car. I do believe this will make someone a very nice car for touring. It is offered at $46,500 or reasonable offer.
