Replica of 1898 Locomobile For Sale

3/1/2016

This is a replica of the 1898 Locomobile Steam Car.  NOW SOLD
The car gets up to steam in 7 minutes and will drive at up to 25 mph. Braking is through small discs on all 4 wheels. There are no gears as maximum torque is achieved at zero speed. Goes as fast forward as backwards! This car was assembled in 2009 by a builder in Holland. It was imported back into the UK and is now road legal. The car is fired by a Reillo Kerosene central heating burner, which is powered by a 12 volt to 240 volt invertor. To start the car turn the key check the water level in the boiler and main tank and let the boiler start. Once up to 230 psi  jump aboard and drive. It really is that easy.
This is a great way to get into and understand Steam Cars. I am selling because I have bought a 1903 Stanley Steamer. There is a closed trailer, which is fitted with a winch, available for this car so that you can attend rallies and events. The whole rig is about one tonne so can be towed by a small car.
Likamobile and trailer £13500.
Likamobile only £12000. Or make me a sensible offer.

1922 Stanley 735B For Sale

3/1/2016

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sotheby’s Hershey event, October 5-6, 2017.
  • One of little more than 1,700 Model 735s produced
  • Veteran of an around the world driving tour
  • Boiler upgraded to gasoline operation
SOLD $36300.00

Though Stanley Steamer has become a part of American automotive language, Stanley Steam Car is the preferred nomenclature of any Stanley owner. The Stanley brothers, identical twins who went by their initials, F.E. and F.O., set about building what was without a doubt the most famous automobile that used steam power to propel itself down the road. The Stanley was built in Massachusetts from 1899 to 1927, although the brothers retired from the company in 1917 while in their sixties. The Stanley was a beautifully engineered car that operated in virtual silence compared to gasoline-engine cars. It was the invention of the electric self-starter on gasoline automobiles more than any single item that spelled doom for the steam car.

The Stanley Model 735 was introduced in 1918. It brought to market a condensing boiler that offered greater range prior to having to stop for a refill—an obvious disadvantage to earlier models. Coils located in a traditional-style front-mounted radiator were part of a closed loop system whereby steam was returned to the boiler instead of being released into the atmosphere. The Model 735 became the most successful of all Stanley models with more than 1,700 sold over the model run.

This 1922 Stanley Model 735B touring is both a rare and interesting car . . . with a legend to match! Eric Massiet du Biest, a Frenchman, was determined to circumvent the earth while driving a steam car. As such, he selected this steamer, which was mechanically restored in 1992. He christened it “Passepartout” as an homage to the valet who accompanied Phineas Fogg in Jules Verne’s epic novel Around the World in 80 Days. He successfully completed his adventure, which is chronicled in the January–March 1993 issue of Bulb Horn. In 2009 the car was sold to a French engineer who completed a cosmetic and mechanical restoration, including improving upon the original boiler system to operate on gasoline, thus rendering the car more drivable and reliable.

Despite having abundant nicks and chips, the patina of this worn but proven Stanley is both appealing and charming. While no show queen, it will no less be the star wherever it appears while providing fun for both the driver and six of his or her friends.

1910 Stanley 70 For Sale

3/1/2016

To be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sotheby’s Hershey event, October 5-6, 2017.
  • Offered from the W. Jay Milligan Collection.
  • A painstaking “big horsepower” recreation by Stanley guru Carl Amsley.
  • Used reliably in many steam car activities over two decades.
  • Recently recommissioned by Alan Kelso.
  • Ideal for the Brass Era touring enthusiast.

SOLD $121000.00

Whoever called this car a Stanley Steamer was not a friend of the Stanley brothers, as they strongly disliked that designation. It was a Stanley Steam Car, even though Stanley Steamer has now become a part of the American language. The brothers were identical twins who went by their initials, F.E. and F.O. They set about building what was, without a doubt, the most famous automobile to use steam power to propel itself down the road.

The Model 70 shown here, one of about 10 known survivors to this specification, was constructed of original and reproduction components in 1985 by the late, great steam enthusiast and Stanley expert, Carl Amsley. It is worth noting that in Stanley circles a recreation is not frowned upon, as these cars ordinarily incorporate numerous improvements and enhancements not seen in factory-stock designs.

This particular car, a 20 steam hp model with a 24 × 14-in. boiler, has superb, reliable performance, equivalent to an eight-cylinder gasoline-powered automobile. This was proven by its longtime owner, the late stunt driver and showman Jay Milligan, who purchased the Stanley from Amsley in 1987. It became a frequent participant in steam tours, including recording the fastest time in the Dead Horse Hill Climb of 1997, then ran in tours in Delaware, Vermont, and Connecticut in 2007, 2008, and 2014, respectively. Yet during all this time it was well-kept enough to achieve its AACA Grand National First Prize honors in 2004. Unused in the last couple of years due to Mr. Milligan’s health, it has been freshly reconditioned for the sale by Stanley expert Alan Kelso, and will be offered in running condition.

An exceptional Stanley for the driving enthusiast, this car boasts power like few other automobiles of its era, and provides a one-of-a-kind driving experience.

1922 Stanley 735 Touring For Sale

3/1/2016

Steam cars manufactured by the Stanley Motor Carriage Company of Newton, Massachusetts were among the first successful commercially produced automobiles.  The ‘Stanley Steamer’ became part of popular American culture and an icon of the old car hobby.  Steam was an easy sell in a century when steam was called “The Power That Moves the World”.  The disadvantages of steam power were also well known:  it could take as long as twenty minutes to bring the boiler up to operating temperature, invention of the electric starter brought ease of operation to gasoline-powered automobiles and fear of boiler explosions was widespread.

1947 Steam Tri-Car

3/1/2016

.A steam tricar built by Bill Chorlton in 1947, heavily influenced by the prewar Morgan three wheeler. You can't but help admire the ingenuity shown in its construction - in spirit it puts me in mind of the wonderful "Sentalike" we sold a couple of years back, the work of an engineer who combined capable construction skills with an unfettered mind (and what must have been a complete shed full of odds and ends saved from other projects).
Motive power is provided by a V-twin steam engine mounted up front, the cat's cradle of chains up front driving water and oil pumps through an intermediate step-down shaft. The engine itself is slide valve, Stephenson's reversing gear, driving to a single back wheel by chain.
The drum type firetube vertical boiler sits under the bonnet, pressure gauge is mounted atop the bonnet in the driver's eye line. Water gauge is a Klinger type, mounted facing forwards with a wing mirror allowing it to be sighted from the driver's seat.
The chassis has rack and pinion steering, independent suspension at the front with drum brakes on all wheels.
Remarkably the thing is road registered, with a V5 document. Rallied regularly over many years, it has now been unused in some time - it is missing its burner (which may be a reason for it falling into disuse) although appears otherwise complete. There's a fuel tank under the boot lid, I suspect the thing would run on a central heating boiler oil burner, same as used by the current replica steam cars.
