midwest steam car tour 20191/27/2019 September 15th is barely a month and a half away and Sheila and Myself are looking forward to hosting the Midwest Steam Car Tour this year The tour will be based at the Baymont Inn in Marietta from Sunday, September 15, to Saturday, September 21, 2019. The block of rooms under “Steam car tour” has been expanded and the hotel can be reached at (740) 374-9660 The daily routes will vary between 60 and 100 miles over pleasantly hilly terrain on mainly good quality roads with light traffic The registration form is attached. Please return it as soon as possible to help us with the planning of the events Although payment would be nice at the time of registration, it can be sent separately The tentative itinerary is as follows: Sunday, Sept 15: Welcome to Marietta… A short trip around the first official settlement between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to get the trailer gremlins out of the car The Fire-up banquet will be held on the Valley Gem Paddle boat as we go up the Ohio River Monday What goes up, must come down… The town of Ava was the site where the USS Shenandoah, A massive Airship in the 1920’s broke up in three sections when it entered a squall line. We’ll be checking out a private collection of memorabilia and there will be an option for the diehards to take some extremely challenging roads to the site where the control module crashed Tuesday Country roads, take me home… We venture into West Virginia to visit the town of Harrisville to visit Cliff's Museum of Car Memorabilia as well as the oldest “five and Dime” still in existence There will be an Icecream Social at the hotel pool in the evening sponsored by Marietta Wednesday Meet the Blannerhassets… Downtown Parkersburg has the oil and gas museum but also offers a unique opportunity to visit the Blannerhasset mansion, which was originally built by an extremely colorful couple on their own private island in the middle of the Ohio River and is only accessible by boat In the evening, the city of Marietta is inviting us to the armory downtown for a pizza party and to explore a couple of wonderfully eclectic collections. The Armory lawn has been reserved till after dark when you are encouraged to fire up your gas lights as the Marietta Police department will escort us back to the hotel Thursday I dig it… We will be going towards old coal country to visit the Muskie Bucket, the last remaining part of the largest mobile earthmover ever built Friday A stroll through the forest… Our last day on the road will lead us through the Wayne National Forest to see some covered bridges The Blow Down Banquet will be held at the Country club behind the hotel If you would like to get a flavor of Marietta’s early history before the tour, please consider reading David McCollough’s current bestseller “the Pioneers” Hope to see you there Herb de la Porte 640 Cleveland Street Elyria, Oh 44035 Cell: 440-567-3079
