Founded in 1957, The Steam Automobile Club of America is the oldest known organization dedicated to the steam automobile. The first issue of the club newsletter concluded by stating:
“Our aim, then, is to maintain the high level of steam restoration, the congenial steam get-togethers, and the joy of operating our steamers safely. Our hobby is one of many choices which give us countless opportunities to disagree. Be it flash vs. fire-tube, or antique vs. modern; all these are personal preferences and have their place.
We feel that the establishment of a steam car enthusiasts club is necessary as a common medium to give and receive information, and promote steam car meets, so that we can continue to enjoy our hobby together with all our new friends. We are counting on everyone to help make this club a success. Let’s all work together to keep steam alive.”
Since that time, the mission has expanded a bit. During the 1960s and 70s, steam received considerable attention as a less polluting alternative to the internal combustion engine. A number of companies and individuals responded with efforts to modernize the basic technology. They may not have revolutionized the market place but they did move the state of the art forward greatly. With the emerging emphasis on biofuels, light steam today is seeing a bit of resurgence. These developments led SACA came to embrace the development of modern light steam as well as the maintenance, restoration and operation of classic machines. Our current philosophy could be summarized thusly:
SACA members run the gamut from antique car enthusiasts to calliope fans. Whatever your interest, there will be some members that share it. We invite you to check us out.

- SACA is dedicated to collecting, preserving and disseminating knowledge of steam automobile, steam boats and light steam power plants. In addition to helping those interested in preserving classic steam automobiles, we will assist those working to advance light steam technology either as a hobby or as a source of renewable alternate energy.”
- SACA has kept the philosophy alive that we are a club of preservationists and innovators. Those that own or are fascinated by historic steam automobiles are equally welcome as is the tinkerer, builder and dreamer.

The Stanley Museum is a history Museum. Established in 1981, the Stanley Museum in Kingfield, Maine, is located in the beautiful Georgian-style Stanley School built in 1903. Kingfield is the birthplace of the Stanley's — important to note because the steam car for which they're most often remembered was built in Watertown, Massachusetts.
The Museum commemorates and preserves the heritage of Stanley family genius. The famous "Stanley Steamer" automobile was invented by Francis Edgar Stanley and manufactured by him and his twin brother, usually referred to as the Stanley twins, F.E. and F.O. The sister, Chansonetta, is equally important for her photographs depicting rural turn-of-the-century American life.

Mark Herman, owner of M.S. Herman and Company, Redding, Connecticut, USA, continues his family’s 50-year legacy of passion for steam-powered automobiles and their restoration.
M.S. Herman and Company is the resource for the expert restoration, care and brokering of period steam automobiles, especially Stanley Steamers. Mark and his team of talented experts provide steam car owners with every aspect of complete antique and steam-powered car restoration, including: rebuilding, reproduction, preservation, repair, collection management and brokering. The company has onsite: a machine shop, and coachbuilding, plumbing, assembly and finishing services. They also make and sell a variety of custom and standard parts for steam cars. Mark plans to publish an online parts catalog in 2018. Until then, inquiries are welcome. M.S. Herman and Company has been a family affair for nearly half a century. Both of Mark’s parents were avid collectors. Mark started restoring cars alongside his father when he was just a kid. Knowing that he would make it his career, he majored in American History, Studio Art, and was educated in Preservation Carpentry. Many people are surprised that Mark’s mother is also a car enthusiast and still an active member of the local HCCA/AACA club, along with his two daughters, one acting as the chapter's assistant secretary. Both daughter’s help in the restoration business in their spare time. Mark’s first steam car restoration was a 1910 Model 60 that he did in 1979 with his father, Stuart. Now deceased, he was the “S” in M.S. Herman and Company. Mark’s most memorable project was the restoration of his father’s 1911 Model 63, which was the family’s first Stanley. Today, Mark owns a 1901 Lane, a 1909 Model R, a 1911 Model 62, a 1910 Model 70 and a 1912 Model 87. M.S. Herman and Company is committed to traditional craftsmanship, hours of study and practice in the field of automotive history as it relates to the steam car era, focusing on the cars’ historical accuracy and performance without sacrificing a strong emphasis on safety. Sales related services can include inspection: evaluation of mechanical, structural, and functional esthetics, as well as transportation. Email [email protected] or call 203-733-7549 |
Less than five minutes from the center of Hockessin, the Marshall Steam Museum at Auburn Heights Preserve offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience life at the dawn of the automotive age. The now-museum was built by T. Clarence Marshall in 1947 to house his growing collection of antique automobiles. Today, visitors can enjoy the many treasures at Auburn Heights thanks to the generosity and vision of Clarence’s son, Tom, and his wife, Ruth. In 2008, they gifted to Delaware State Parks the estate land and buildings, including a beautiful 1897 Queen Anne mansion that was the Marshall home, while donating to the Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve, a 501(c)3 charitable organization, the extraordinary vehicles of the Marshall collection. The museum features the world’s largest operating collection of Stanley steam cars, a 1916 electric car, and two 1930s Packards, in addition to the Auburn Valley Railroad with its 1/8th-size coal-fired steam trains that circle the property. Don Bourdon is the owner of Bourdon Boiler Works (BBW) located in Woodstock, Vermont. Established in 1975, BBW is the primary manufacturer of Stanley fire-tube boilers and burners for the steam car hobby worldwide. In addition, BBW provides full restoration services for owners of Stanley steam cars with facilities for both cosmetic and mechanical work. Over the past 40 years. BBW has constructed over 600 boilers, more than any other manufacturer since the Stanley Motor Carriage Company closed its doors in 1924.
Don Bourdon grew up with Stanley steam cars. His father, Paul Bourdon (1913-2001) purchased his first Stanley, a 1912 Model 63 in 1930 or 85 years ago in nearby Quechee, Vermont at the age of 17. The car still remains in the family collection. From 1963 to 1985. Don and his late brother operated, during the summer and early fall, a 1913 Stanley Mountain Wagon from the historic Woodstock Inn in their hometown. Over this period and 25,000 miles later, nearly 100,000 guests of the Inn were given a 4 mile lectured tour of historic Woodstock village. Interestingly, only twice during the 25 years of operation did the Stanley not make it back to its starting point at the Inn on its own power. Mr. Bourdon has toured extensively throughout the United States (26 states) and Canada (5 provinces) as well as in Ireland and England with his 1911 30 HP Stanley, covering nearly 45,000 miles over the past 20 years. He has been an active participant in the rigorous Red Rock Tours, limited to 1914 and earlier gas and steam cars, which range from 2000 to 3000 miles each. Don Bourdon remains committed to accurate restoration of Stanley automobiles and gives particular attention to detail and authenticity. His is a past Director and President of the Stanley Museum Inc. located in Kingfield, Maine. The birthplace of the Stanley twins. He remains actively engaged in the hobby and is most willing to assist others in the proper restoration and operation of Stanley motor cars. email [email protected] |
Richard Hallet founded his company Hallet Oils to satisfy his passion for steam and the oils needed to lubricate the steam chambers and moving parts not lubricated buy the engine and in some cases crank case oils. Richard designed and manufactured various types of oils to cover all forms of steam driven machines, from ships to trains, from Traction and Sentinel engines to steam cars etc. His oils are recognized as one of the best people can now use. Richard became interested in steam cars and contacted well respected steam car repairer and parts manufacturer John Gould.
John worked with him and introduced him to Basil Craske a well know steam car enthusiast and car owner. Richard and Basil worked together in developing the oil now supplied and widely used in the steam car world today. Basil told Richard of the problems and requirements needed and Richard developed the oils. Richard went on to develop engine oils and crankcase oils for steam cars and Sentinel trucks as well as oils used in traction engines. His knowledge helped many people overcome lubrication problems experienced by steam vehicles owners. After seeking out a specialist oil company to purchase his company who Richard consider would continue with his development of oils for steam driven vehicles he sold and retired. His legacy has continued on thanks to Caldo oils who have continued to develop and sell steam oils under the Hallet Brand name.

RH Insurance
From steam cars to future classics – RH has been providing insurance that covers your vehicle on the journey from dream to reality for over 40 years.
Steam car insurance needs to be provided by people who are experts in these kinds of vehicle. Your steam car insurance policy should be based on a real understanding of the value of your vehicle, its rarity and the cost of preservation and upkeep.
One of RH’s ‘hidden benefits’ is the fact they don’t charge a single penny in administration fees. They will also return your cherished salvage (providing it’s over 20 years of age and the vehicle is repairable within DVLA guidelines) free of charge. Most competitors will offer you the option to ‘buy back’ the salvage which has an adverse impact on your overall settlement in the event of a total loss.
Speak to a member of the RH team for a quote designed for your needs. If you have any questions about RH’s cover, or would like to find out more, call their friendly team on 0333 043 3911 or email [email protected].
